Insurance, explained

Public liability insurance

Public liability insurance concerns a business’s legal liability for specified injury to other people or damage to their property arising from insured business activities. It may also address associated defence costs.

01 / The meaning

What it means.

It is relevant to businesses that receive visitors, work at client premises or interact with the public. A person being injured does not by itself establish that the business is legally responsible. The circumstances, applicable law and policy wording matter. Employee injuries, professional advice and registered motor vehicle risks commonly require separate consideration rather than being assumed to fall within this category.

The business description, territorial limits and exclusions deserve as much attention as the headline limit. Contractual promises can go beyond liability that would otherwise exist, and property in the business’s care may have special restrictions. Check whether defence costs sit inside or outside the limit. Notify allegations promptly and obtain insurer guidance before admitting liability, paying compensation or appointing solicitors.

02 / Put it in context

A practical example.

Hypothetical example

Hypothetical example: a customer alleges an unstable display injured their shoulder. The shop records the incident, preserves available footage and forwards the demand to its broker. Liability and any policy response remain to be assessed.

This example illustrates the term. It does not predict a claim outcome.
