01 / The meaning
What it means.
The policyholder’s options and the insurer’s ability to cancel depend on the contract and applicable law. Notices, effective dates and payment arrangements should be checked rather than assumed. A request sent to a broker is not the same as confirmation that the insurer has processed a cancellation. Cooling-off rights, where available, are also distinct from cancellation later in the period.
Refunds can be affected by minimum retained premiums, short-rate calculations, fees, taxes and outstanding premium funding obligations. Ending cover may also leave continuing exposure, particularly where a claims-made policy is involved or a contract requires insurance after work finishes. Arrange any replacement or run-off discussion before the effective cancellation time, and keep the cancelled policy for historical reference.
02 / Put it in context
A practical example.
Hypothetical example: A consultancy stops taking new work and asks to cancel its professional indemnity policy. Before proceeding, the owner reviews outstanding projects, potential claims and run-off options. Closing the office does not establish that earlier professional exposures have ended or that a refund is available.
This example illustrates the term. It does not predict a claim outcome.
