Insurance, explained

Management liability insurance

Management liability insurance is a package or group of covers addressing specified exposures arising from the management of an organisation, with separate sections and definitions that vary between products.

01 / The meaning

What it means.

Potential components include directors and officers liability, employment practices, company liability, crime and selected investigation expenses. A package name does not show which sections have been purchased or whether the company and its people share a limit. The ownership structure, workforce and management activities should be described accurately when considering the relevant options.

This cover is distinct from public liability for operational injury or damage and professional indemnity for services supplied to clients. It is not a guarantee against poor business results. Known disputes, deliberate conduct, contractual obligations and fines or penalties require careful attention, including whether a liability can lawfully be insured. Notification requirements may operate on a claims-made basis.

02 / Put it in context

A practical example.

Hypothetical example

Hypothetical example: A former employee alleges that a dismissal involved discriminatory treatment. The employer gathers the relevant records and notifies the allegation. An employment practices section may be relevant, but insured parties, timing, exclusions and defence arrangements still need assessment.

This example illustrates the term. It does not predict a claim outcome.
